In 2018, marble was an extremely popular material in kitchens, bathrooms and beyond, and a deep blue-green color called “Oceanside” graced many interiors as Sherwin Williams’ color of the year.

What are the hot architectural house design trends that will be seen in luxury homes throughout the United States? For insights, we turned to our in-house experts who keep their fingers on the pulse of the styles, colors and materials that are in high demand in luxury homes. Here’s what they shared.

Bold colors

Even though gray continues to be popular for cabinetry, walls and hardwood flooring, Lisa says it’s exciting how people are starting to embrace bold, unexpected color.

“Homeowners used to be afraid of color in anything fairly permanent, preferring to just add a few colorful throw pillows—but not anymore. Red and blue aren’t going out of style any time soon, and the jolt of color gives the rooms a wonderful energy and individuality.”

Dark stain colors for hardwood floors

There’s no denying that a dark wood floor gives any room an elegant, high-end feel—especially those that benefit from ample natural light which shows off the contrast beautifully. Additionally, luxury architectural homedesigners typically don’t have to be concerned about dark floors making rooms look small. They take your flooring choice into consideration to ensure the room still feels spacious and welcoming. Dark floors offer a timeless quality with tones that tend to always be “in style.”

Quartzite countertops

Quartzite countertops are becoming more popular due to their beauty and versatility as a material; they are low maintenance, offer greater durability than granite and can look very similar to marble without fear of etching.

Black windows, including black interior trim

A stark change from the traditional white windows and white trim seen on most homes, this black-on-black design trend works especially well in modern and contemporary homes—but when done well, can suit homes of any style. Black sashes in particular give the look of “iron” windows without the expense of true metal windows. .

“Continuous” base casing

Sarah says that more contemporary interior trim profiles, like those that feature “continuous” base and casing rather than trim molding that is crafted from several distinct pieces, is something more and more luxury homeowners are opting for throughout their new homes. It complements other clean lines in the home, offering a crisp alternative to more ornamental casing and molding choices.

Navy cabinets

Navy is an on-trend color throughout homes, but Krista is seeing a lot of homeowners eschewing traditional wood stains and whites on cabinets and opting for a rich navy. Not as stark as black, navy offers a similar amount of drama with a hint of warmth, and offers a plethora of choices for accent colors, from bright white to warm grey and many others.

Vanities that look like furniture

Up until recently, there seemed to be some unwritten rule that your powder room vanity had to look like a box with a sink on top; and if you were lucky, the box and the sink could be attractive. But in 2019 look for homeowners to get more creative with vanities that show their unique tastes and style, from an antique wash basin to a vintage dresser repurposed for a new life. This trend may expand out of the bathroom and into other areas; so keep your eye out.

Full stone slab shower walls

A true retreat at the end of a long workday, a spa-like master bathroom is top on the wish list for many homeowners. And one feature that Krista says is becoming more popular is full stone slab shower walls. Not only do they look amazing, but they’re practical; no grout lines to get dirty!

Brass faucets and decorative hardware

This is not your 1980s brass trend! A little brass goes a long way, and when used with a light touch, brass can add a touch of elegance and glamour to any room. Whether used as drawer pulls in the kitchen, a hinge on the door of your wine cellar or holding a starring role as your bathroom faucet, many homeowners are giving brass a second chance to make an amazing first impression.
