Combining Brick and Stone to Create Luxury in Glencoe, IL

Ask any homeowner what his or her definition of a luxury home is, and you’ll get a different answer from everyone you ask. That’s because all of us have our own specific tastes and ideas about what constitutes a luxurious environment.

On this project, the combination of beautiful brick and stone epitomized luxury for this homeowner, who wanted a home with traditional styling that felt “high end” without feeling sterile or museum-like. Working together, Pickell’s architects and designers created a beautiful home with luxurious touches both inside and out.

The home’s exterior features a steep roofline with dramatic peaks; the arched front doorway is mirrored by the arched dormer window above the doorway and the arched transom windows that adorn the garage doors. The tumbled paver driveway creates a finished entryway to the home that feels welcome without feeling unnecessarily formal, and large windows allow ample opportunities for natural light to enter the home and the garage.

And in the backyard, the home’s patio area is bordered by a grand stone chimney and fireplace wall; even here, Orren Pickell added bricks in a decorative pattern to heighten the visual interest and add impact. Additionally, the design team included plenty of floor-to-ceiling windows in the plan, giving the homeowners plenty of opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty of their landscape.

Inside the custom home, the stone fireplace serves as the focal point for the family’s living room, with a large bank of floor-to-ceiling windows facing the back of the home’s lot. Warm hardwood floors provide a welcoming, comfortable feeling a room that may otherwise feel more formal with its extensive base and crown molding and other heavy trim elements. Recessed overhead lighting allows the homeowners to control the mood of the room, adding more light in the evening or on cloudy days.

The sumptuous hardwood floors carry through into the kitchen, where Orren Pickell designed and installed custom cabinets that reach to the ceiling, providing the homeowners with amazing (not to mention alluring) storage capabilities. Granite countertops offer ample prep space for a quick snack or a full spread, and the hand-painted range hood showcase’s the homeowner’s specific tastes.

The kitchen’s center island serves double-duty as a prep space with sink on one side and a breakfast bar on the other. The bar’s curves mirror the curves in the kitchen’s tray ceiling, creating a pleasing visual effect, and the built-in shelving at either end of the bar offers the homeowner’s perfect areas for storing and displaying tableware, platters and other decorative items.

The home’s steep roofline makes for amazing architecture inside the home, which can be seen in the bedrooms. For example, in this bedroom, the design team installed architectural beams to bring even more attention to the unique angles of the ceiling. A wrought iron chandelier, simple yet substantial, anchors the beams and gives the room a sense of scale.

In the home’s bathrooms, luxury abounds. In the master bathroom, Orren Pickell designed a large custom shower for the homeowners, along with a standalone jacuzzi tub. Marble counters atop custom white cabinets and brushed nickel pulls and plumbing fixtures give the area a modern vibe, while overhead and task lighting ensure that it’s easy to get ready for work or a night on the town.

Luxury follows you everywhere you go in this traditional style Glencoe home. For example, in the home office, the rich wood built-in bookcases and heavy wood beams on the ceilings provide a sense of privacy and seclusion from the rest of the home.
