Building Every Woman’s Dream Closet in Winnetka, IL

And in many cases, the main living areas are still fully functioning, but storage areas are falling behind the curve. Perhaps the original his-and-hers walk-in closet no longer works for her; she wants a place to be able to see, store and try on all of her shoes, clothing and accessories, while taking her time getting ready for an evening out on the town.

If you find yourself longing to add a bit of lounging space and luxury to your closet space, get inspired by this recent couture closet build out we completed for a client in Winnetka. On this project, the client wanted an area where she could easily store her extensive shoe collection, as well as all of her clothing and accessories. She wanted it to have the feel of one of her favorite high-end boutiques so that she felt as pampered in her own closet as she did when she was shopping. And she also insisted that the area have plenty of natural light so that it didn’t feel dark and cavernous like her previous closet.

Working with the client, Orren Pickell’s design team created a plan that incorporated several exterior windows to allow for ample natural lighting. Additionally, we installed glass front doors for many of the cabinets along with interior lighting to create a window-like effect and provide additional ambient light to the space. The designer’s light color palette for the cabinetry, walls and ceiling also augmented the natural light while creating a stark contrast with the dark hardwood floors, providing a clean look.

Architects and designers considered the practical as well as the beautiful, providing a bench to allow for easily slipping shoes off and on, and a small wet bar area for fixing a beverage while preparing for a night out. And ample room in the closet means that it will be easy for girlfriends to give their opinion on which dress is the best choice for the upcoming soiree.

On this Winnetka project, jeweled drawer pulls and a bejeweled chandelier added just the right touch of sparkle to the room, while rich fabrics in the window coverings and window seat kept the area from feeling sterile or cold. Bold gold stenciling added interest and attention to a doorway while mirroring the more subtle gold stenciling highlighting the decorative ceiling.

Working with the clients, Orren Pickell designed a shingle style home filled with architectural details that evoke the romantic seaside lifestyle.

Unlike other architectural styles that prize symmetry, the clients embraced the unique, eclectic beauty of their home with its complex roof line including dormers and hip roofs. The rounded tower adds interest not only to the home’s exterior but provides a visually striking room inside especially with its wooden beams on the ceiling that accent the room’s shape. The back side of the home, which faces the lake, is filled with windows which allows the homeowners exquisite views from nearly every room as well as providing for ample natural light throughout the home.
